This question makes many candidates nervous, but it's not designed to catch you out.
What your interviewer is really trying to learn:
1. Self-awareness
Can you honestly identify an area where you're still developing?
2. Accountability
Do you take ownership of your development, or do you avoid acknowledging challenges?
3. Growth mindset
Are you actively working to improve your skills and performance?
4. Honesty
Can you give a genuine answer instead of a rehearsed cliché like "I work too hard"?
5. Coachability
Are you open to feedback and willing to learn?
So how should you answer?
Step 1: Choose a genuine weakness that's relevant to your professional development.
Your weakness should relate to your work experience, skills or career growth. It should be relevant in your role and something you've recognised as an area for improvement. Avoid choosing a weakness that would prevent you from performing the job successfully.
Step 2: Explain what you're doing to improve it.
This is the most important part of your answer. Employers want to see that you've identified the weakness and are actively taking steps to address it.
Step 3: Share the progress you've made.
Demonstrate how your efforts are helping you grow and improve professionally.
Here's an example of a strong response:
"One area I've been working on is public speaking. Earlier in my career, I wasn't very comfortable speaking in front of groups and would often avoid opportunities to present. Over the past year, I've made a conscious effort to participate more in team meetings and lead toolbox talks when possible. While I'm still developing my confidence, I've become much more comfortable communicating with larger groups."
This answer works because it:
• Shows self-awareness
• Demonstrates a willingness to improve
• Highlights personal growth
• Relates to a professional skill relevant in the workplace
Remember: Interviewers aren't looking for perfection. They're looking for candidates who can recognise areas for improvement, take ownership of their development and demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth.
The best answers aren't about having no weaknesses. They're about identifying a genuine area for development, explaining how you're working to improve it and showing how that growth will make you better at your job.
